John Macatitch
Night TrainJohn Macatitch is a Homicide detective and colleague of Mike Hoolihan who later becomes a squad supervisor. Mike regards him as a good man and an exceptionally capable detective. His part in the account is brief but consequential: on March 4, he calls Mike about Jennifer Rockwell’s death, bringing her into an investigation that is also deeply personal to her.
Identity and Working Relationship
Macatitch is identified by the familiar nickname Johnny Mac as well as by his rank, Detective Sergeant. He works alongside Mike in Homicide, and the account retrospectively notes his advancement to squad supervisor. Mike’s appraisal of him is warmly professional: she considers him both a great colleague and a formidable detective.
The March 4 Call
At 20:15, Mike is alone at home while Tobe is away at a computer convention. She has been startled from a doze by the passing night train when the phone rings. Macatitch tells her that he has to call in a major case and asks her to ride a note for him. The call turns an otherwise quiet evening into the start of Mike’s involvement in the death investigation.
Arrival at Whitman Avenue
Macatitch and Mike drive to Whitman Avenue together in an unmarked car. The residence is already surrounded by police and other responders; Mike badges through the uniforms gathered at the front door. Her presence there is not that of a detached colleague: she has known Jennifer since Jennifer was eight and regards her as a favorite. Macatitch’s call and arrival thus connect the formal Homicide response to Mike’s personal history with the dead woman, while the available account gives no further detail about his investigative actions at the scene.
